April is National Cesarean Awareness Month

By now, and over the course of the last few years you've likely read SO many opinions, articles, posts, etc... about C-section vs. Vaginal birth moms.  Some opinions are harsh, some are defensive, and most have the author trying to plead to their audience why theirs is the best opinion on the subject.

While I agree with some, and vehemently disagree with MANY others, at the end of the day there's this-  We're all just Moms and I believe in my heart that you make the best decision and follow the best recommendations available to you in those moments.  I don't feel as if someone is "less" of a woman or mother if they had an epidural, or stronger than another because she had a natural birth.  More often than not, a cesarean is NOT a decision the parents choose to make and instead is made for them by the Dr's as a life-saving measure.

That being said - April is National Cesarean Awareness Month.  I had a C-section and it sucked.  It was NOT my choice, and I was scared, sad, and felt alone until my spouse could join me in the room and hold my hand. I couldn't see anything except the ceiling, and a small line of sight to the side of me. I puked instantly when the Dr. said "You might feel the sensation of my hands". It rolled down the side of my face while the nurse, feeling sorry for me, wiped my face and told me it was OK, while I silently cried and tears streamed down my face...  I didn't get to see my son after they pulled him out, they rushed him to the side to start working on him and I didn't hear any cries for what felt like forever-  I was helpless, laying on a cold, surgical operating table, cut wide open and unable to do anything at all.  Finally, I heard his cry and it just sounded like an Angel singing, and I could relax. Those moments were torture. I didn't get skin to skin, or even to kiss his head or touch him right away...
I don't remember much of the next 12 hours or so... I couldn't decide on a name, I couldn't stay awake to have conversations with the doctors, my body itched so viciously that I thought I would scratch myself raw, I had no idea I had been cathed because I had so much medicine in me and was so exhausted that I wasn't even close to any version of "myself".  It is probably THE thing in my life that I am so regretful and sad about that I cannot remember SO many things from that day.

I shared a little of my story becauseI'm no better or worse than my friends or clients that I've photographed that have pushed 2x and had their baby, or were in labor for 16+ hours, or who decided to have an elective C-section.  IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER.... we're just doing the best we can, and we want to walk out of that hospital or birth center with a healthy baby.  A privilege that far too many parents don't get to enjoy. While we're over here arguing over some other woman's body, there are parents who have lost children, who have spent their entire early lives in the hospital and/or will forever struggle with medical complications.

So, in all of this, I just plead with you to stop judging any mother about how she delivered her baby.  Encourage her, support her, ask what she needs, and tell her you love her.   Maybe in the future, we'll just have National BIRTH awareness month and recognize it's just an amazingly awesome feat no matter the HOW behind it. <3

Since it IS Cesarean Awareness Month, however, I did want to share with you these images from my recent client's birth. Baby Rowan was born healthy to his Mama who didn't have that luxury the last time...

Mattingly & Eltringham Family Photo Session | Carmel, IN Family Photographer

Oh boy was this session was a LONG time coming!!  Hannah and I had been trying to get this scheduled since the early fall of last year, but weather and kid's schedules always derailed us until just a few weeks ago! Thankfully she was cool as a cucumber and we just kept at it looking for dates for their family photos that worked with everyone's busy lives!

This session was really fun in that it doubled as not only a family session for their soon to be blended family, but also some really cute photo/prop ideas for Hannah & Charlie's "Save the Date's" for their upcoming Fall wedding!

We had beautiful weather, even if the wind was a bit ridiculous and all of those kids???? Well for family photos they were just the best, absolute troopers who cooperated, were helpful and had giggles and mischief at all the right times!

The kids ranged from ages 11-5 and were just awesome to work with and I mean, how cute are they ?!?!?

I'm excited for this gorgeous family and their future together!

Also... that gorgeous hair of Hannah's? Well, shockingly ;) she's a hair & makeup artist! If you're in the Indianapolis or Carmel areas go see her! Here's a link to her information www.salonlofts.com/hannah_mattingly

Have you booked your family photos yet this year?  If not, I'd love to talk with you more and capture your family at this time & provide you those memories for years to come!  Email me at RhiannonLoydPhotography@gmail.com or fill out the Contact Me form on my site.

I'm getting ready to embark on a fun and new project with Beauty Revived and their annual "50 Beautiful Children" project!  I was so honored and excited to be chosen as 1 of 50 photographers across the country to participate in this campaign!

The goal is for nominations from the community to be submitted to highlight a special child that has displayed qualities of grace, kindness, social consciousness, bravery, and beauty in how they are living their life and treating others.

There is SO much good in the world and it starts with our little ones!  I'm excited to get to share one of their stories with you all!

How it works:

  • Go to the nomination page on my site here:  NOMINATION FORM HERE

  • They will receive a FREE portrait session
  • Their images and story will be featured in the fall issue of the Beauty Revived magazine as well as a featured blog post on their site as well

Spring Break, Downtown, and Pokemon Go | Indianapolis, IN | Family Photographer

So as photographers, we're always hearing how we need to shoot for "us" and what we want, and how we want sometimes- so we don't experience burnout and continue to find ways to be creative and grow with this craft. I do try to do this... and my kids would agree as evidenced by a family game at dinner the other night of "Guess who I am" - where they proceeded to mock me saying "OMG you guys the light is so pretty right now, get outside so I can take some pictures of you!"  (HA HA HA... and everyone laughed while I commended them on their VERY accurate portrayal of me)

For the first time, I'm sharing some of those personal images with you all and mainly to push myself to update this blog more and put what I love the most out there for the world to see... these 3 crazy kids.

We ended up doing some pretty fun "Stay-Cation" things with our boys for last week's Spring Break.  We've all been so busy with kid's schedules, work schedules, and I ended up dislocating my patella (knee cap) and have been hobbling around- so keeping it easy but also fun was a must for us!

Que-  DOWNTOWN DAY!!!!  Really, this just means, we walked (ahem- I hobbled) around downtown for about 3 miles people watching, Pokemon Go hunting, playing tag at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and ooh-ing and aaahhh-ing over the incredulous amount of choices at Rocketfizz.  We capped off our Spring Break time with some family movies, Laser Tag, a super fun hotel stay and of course some swimming at the pool.   And really, am I the only parent that when they start talking about these "like, super epic Pokemon" and saying their names, I want to say "Bless you" or something because surely they must be sneezing or having a coughing fit, because I mean, what are those names, even ?!?!

I love getting the kids out to explore their city and get out of the rut of all of our day to day schedules!  I really tried to stay out of their way and just capture some of their moments together-  with the exception of asking for ONE picture of the 3 of them while at the monument and needless to say by the giggles, I didn't get it!

Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy some of these fun shots of my crew.  <3

Kelly | Maternity Session | Indianapolis, IN family photographer

Kelly and I met online through a mutual friend's referral and after our first few messages back and forth I knew we would be a good fit!  She is the owner of The Beauty Market salon, located in the Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis and one of her clients, whose son plays with ours on their travel soccer team, referred me!  I love this small world of ours sometimes! <3

Kelly and her husband Chris have SUCH an amazing story of love, strength, surviving the odds, and perseverance. Their 2.5 year old Greyson had an extremely rough start to his life and they are still dealing with the ongoing concerns and maintenance to this day.

From mom Kelly: " Greyson was born with a rare esophageal abnormality (his type & variation of the abnormality make him the 2nd case in the world) that could not be repaired until he was 4.5months old. He has had 4 esophageal repairs, a lung repair & a bowel repair along with nearly 50 other surgeries He spent the majority of the first 2 years inpatient at Riley Hospital. On his first birthday he went into septic shock from IV access at his birthday party resulting in a lack of oxygen to his brain while being resuscitated causing him to have a stroke. The stroke caused damage to his brain resulting in seizures & scarring on the brain. He has made a near full recovery from his brain damage although his esophageal issues will be something we deal with likely for the rest of his life. He is g-tube fed but working hard in feeding therapy to hopefully one day eat by mouth. He has survived against all odds & baffled many specialists. He has maintained nothing but pure joy & love of life through even the most tragic times. We feel the most lucky because we were the mommy & daddy he chose to fight along with him & he is the sunshine of our lives & entire family"

I'm so excited to be there to welcome the newest little addition to their family when Kelly gives birth in a few weeks! Check back for a new post introducing the newest little Walsh family member <3
